Hairy Fiddles Series
The hairy fiddle drawings and watercolors came about as a way to explore materials and playful ideas. I have played fiddle most of my life. The fiddle music of Appalachia, the Celtic Isles, and other various styles is some of my most favorite to play and to hear.
One day, out of a sort of creative block necessity, I started drawing fiddles made of hair. I chose hair because I was looking at a font an illustrator had created out of braids. Each letter was an intricate twist of hair with strands flying loose. I thought "I can do that," and set out to draw a fiddle in a similar style. It was harder than I expected, though, and so I drew another, and then another. I looked up different types of braids, and then the fiddle locks began to develop their own personalities. The drawings started out in black ink, then were done in red ink, then in watercolor.
